Gold bullion Britannia coins are the UK's most popular Capital Gains Tax exempt 1 Ounce gold coin. Introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987, these British gold bullion coins have a face value of £100. Between 1987 - 2012, the coins were struck in 22 carat gold, from 2013 onwards, the coins have been struck in 24 carat gold.
The coins all contain one troy ounce of gold whether they are struck in 22 carat gold (0.917) or 24 carat gold (0.9999). We actually prefer the earlier dated coins as the quality of the striking is far superior to more recent issues.
The 2008 Britannias are 22 carat gold which means they have a gold fineness of 91.67%. The rest of the composition of the coin is silver. Even though the fineness between certain Britannias are different, they will always contain one troy ounce of pure gold.
For investors seeking to acquire the best value 22-carat or 24-carat Britannias, we recommend exploring our best value Britannias with premiums starting from 1.25%!
The fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. The portrait was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
ELIZABETH II . D . G REG . FID . DEF . 100 POUNDS
The reverse design is exclusive to the 2008 Britannias. It was designed by John Bergdahl and shows Britannia's skirt transitioning into the waves of the sea. Britannia holds a shield and trident and a lighthouse is visible in the background. The stunning design features thick lines and bold text which make this one of the most popular Britannia designs.

The design is often referred to as the 'Lighthouse Britannia', 'Britannia Skirt' or 'Britannia Wave' design.
