Synopsis

As an official partner of The Royal Mint, Chards Coin and Bullion dealer is able to offer a diverse range of investment coins and bars, such as sovereign and Britannia coins.

The Official Marker of British Coins

The Royal Mint is a government-owned organisation with a history spanning over 1,100 years. It continues to serve the British public by issuing decimal coinage, definitive coins, and releasing a wide range of coins and bars each year, catering to investors and collectors of precious metals.

Chards Coin and Bullion dealer was among the first UK bullion dealers, founded in 1964 by our director, Lawrence Chard. Over the last six decades, we have forged strong relationships with various mints, refiners, and suppliers, including The Royal Mint. These partnerships enable us to offer our customers larger quantities of investment bullion coins and bars, enhancing their investment portfolios.

Due to our bullion-focused relationship with The Royal Mint and two other members of the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association), we are among the few UK dealers that are full members of the LBMA. This status grants us the ability to influence and shape the LBMA's strategy and essential market solutions for the future.

Coin & Bar Offerings

Today The Royal Mint's two popular investment coin options are gold sovereign coins and Britannia coins which are issued in several precious metal types such as gold, silver, and platinum. Additionally, The Royal Mint releases a range of investment and collector coin and bar series, including but not limited to the following:

Sovereign Coins

The sovereign coin was first issued in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII and continues to be released over 500 years later. The most recent release is the 2024 sovereign, minted during the reign of His Majesty King Charles III. Charles ascended to the throne of England and other Commonwealth countries on September 8, 2022, following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

If you're seeking the most affordable sovereign coins for investment purposes, we offer the best value sovereign coins at our lowest premiums.

Britannia Coins

The gold Britannia coin, initially made of 22-carat gold, was issued by The Royal Mint in 1987. However, it wasn't until 2013 that the gold Britannias started being manufactured in 24-carat gold. Many other countries had already begun manufacturing their own 24-carat gold coins decades before including the Canadian Maple Leaf, which debuted in 1979.

Ten years later in 1997 silver Britannias coins began being manufactured by The Royal Mint in 0.999 fine silver to cater for silver investors and have since become Britain's most popular silver bullion coin series to invest in.

The most recent Britannia gold and silver coins to be released are the 2024 Britannia coins.

However, Lady Britannia does not only appear on UK bullion Britannia coins; she also features in The Royal Mint's Britannia bar series. These bars feature Lady Britannia depicted holding her trident and shield, symbolising Britain's naval and military strength.

Famous Engravers Work at The Royal Mint

The Royal Mint, since its inception, has welcomed many world-renowned artists who have inspired numerous other talented individuals to work for The Royal Mint or submit designs that have gone on to become iconic features of UK coinage.

Among the most famous engravers to have worked on British coinage are those who have already been featured as part of The Great Engravers series by The Royal Mint or will be in the future. One such engraver who has already been featured is Benedetto Pistrucci, best known for his St. George and the Dragon design, which first appeared on the 1817 modern sovereign and has since been featured on almost every sovereign design to date.

Today, The Royal Mint uses a mix of hand-engraving and digital tools to help speed up the process. The Royal Mint claims that they produce more than 5 billion coins and blanks annually, distributed across over 40 countries.

The Royal Mint Museum

The Royal Mint opened its doors to the highly-rated Royal Mint Museum in 2009. Many numismatic coins, Medals, and minting equipment are displayed in this museum rather than at The Royal Mint premises as a way to split the two companies apart.

On 29th November 2022, Chards travelled to beautiful Wales to visit the official maker of British coins, the Royal Mint! It took over 5 hours to make the journey from Blackpool, but it was well worth it! During our visit at the Royal Mint, we saw how British coins are manufactured before they are circulated to millions across the United Kingdom. The history that the Royal Mint holds is expressed in coins throughout the years. With the dies on show, and multiple games to enjoy, it's certainly a place you wouldn't want to miss.
