Synopsis

We have a lot to cover this month! The end of 2021 saw some massive coin releases, and news on loads of 2022 coins we can expect soon. We have all the details on no less than 7(!) new 50p coins, Prince William’s 40th birthday coin and the first release in The British Monarchs Collection. As if that wasn’t enough, the £2 coin is turning 25! And there will be a 15-coin set featuring the return of the most popular £2 designs! First, let's take a look at recent releases you might have missed...

2022 King Henry VII Coins

Artist's Impression of Henry VII Coin

If you’re a history buff, a budding numismatist, or you just have an affinity for the royal family, you won’t want to miss out on the new Henry VII coin! Produced by the Royal Mint, the Henry VII coins are the first release in an exciting new series, “The British Monarchs Collection”.

What makes these Henry VII coins truly special is that rather than featuring a brand new design, the coins use an original coinage portrait by Alexander of Bruchsal. Transposed from his original designs, the reverse features a crowned King Henry VII facing right. We’ve seen a very similar design on the Henry VII groat. Showing the King in a profile portrait opposed to a full medieval portrait really sets the coin apart from more contemporary releases.

There will be a total of 21 different coins issued from now until 2026. We're looking forward to the Henry VIII coins, or the Queen Mary coins in particular!

2021 Great Engravers Gothic Crown

We had to wait until the end of 2021 for one of the most highly anticipated events in the coin world - the release of the third coin in the Great Engravers Series! The coins feature the reverse from the original Queen Victoria gothic crown, which was designed by William Wyon. We have to say we LOVE the design on these coins (which looks even better in person!) As if the release wasn't exciting enough, we also found out that the coin is the first release in a 2-part series! The next coin, which we expect at some point in 2022, will feature the Queen Victoria gothic portrait, also designed by Wyon.

2022 Platinum Jubilee Coins

Just when we thought the Royal Mint were done with their huge coin releases, they pulled out the big guns - Platinum Jubilee coins! Celebrating 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II, these coins pay a deserving tribute to the UK's longest reigning monarch.

There are several designs in the jubilee series including a monumental first! The 50p coins are the first 50ps issued to celebrate a royal event. The simple design features the number '70' with Her Majesty's Royal Cypher, and the dates of her reign.

The £5 coins feature the Royal Mantle, similar to that found on William IV coinage.  Designed by John Bergdahl, it shows the quartered shield of the Royal Arms, surrounded by the Order of the Garter. Another design appears on the larger coins in the series. Also designed by John Bergdahl, it features the Royal Cypher, surrounded by a rococo cartouche, reserved for use on only the grandest coins!

2022 50 Years of Pride 50p

Now information about upcoming coins! A range of 50p coins will be issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the first UK Pride event. Taking place in London in 1972, around 2,000 people marched through the London streets, travelling from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square. With the last few pride events being cancelled due to Covid, the celebrations are set to return in 2022, bigger and better than ever.

Excitingly, this new coin design will feature elements of the pride flag, alongside the inscription “PRIDE PROTEST VISIBILITY UNITY EQUALITY” as well as the number "50". We hope this will be a coloured 50p so the flag stands out!

2022 Alan Turing 50p

Artist's Impression of Alan Turing 50p

Another welcome addition to the 50p coin is British mathematician, Alan Turing. During World War II, Turing worked for the British government as part of the top-secret code-breaking department at Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes. He worked with a team to decipher coded military messages between Nazis, known as the Enigma code. During this process he created Victory, an electro-mechanical machine to uncode the messages. This machine helped win the war and laid the foundations for modern computing.

We're glad to see Turing honoured on a UK coin, the design of which will consist of a cogwheel with the inscription “ALAN TURING”, set against a background of letters. Turing already features on the £50 banknote, introduced in 2021.

2022 100 Years of the BBC 50p

Before Netflix there was the BBC. Founded in 1922, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the oldest national broadcaster in the world, and, employing over 23,000 people, also the largest. With a directive to inform, educate and entertain, the BBC started as a humble 4-person operation, making daily radio broadcasts in London. During World War II these radio shows provided much-needed comfort to the nation.

Adapting to new technology, the BBC began television broadcasting 1936. Through the years it has expanded and now has 10 TV channels, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and a very extensive website. The BBC World Service offers news and information in over 40 languages.

The coin design will feature a globe with transmitter waves accompanied by the inscription “1922-2022 100 YEARS OF OUR BBC INFORM EDUCATE ENTERTAIN”. We can't wait to add this coin to our collection!

2022 Prince William 40th Birthday £5

Artist's Impression of Prince William 40th Birthday Coin

Our future monarch, Prince William, will turn 40-years-old on the 21st June. Although mint's around the world, particularly those within the Commonwealth, have produced birthday coins over the years, this is the first UK coin to celebrate William's birthday. It's not the first UK coin to honour him however, he of course featured on the 2011 Royal Wedding £5, celebrating his wedding to Catherine.

The design will feature a portrait of The Duke of Cambridge accompanied by his cypher and age. The silver proof version of the coin will have the edge text "HRH THE DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE".

2022 25th Birthday of the £2 Coin Set

Some of our favourite £2 coins are set to make a welcome return in this 25th anniversary of the £2 coin set! Whilst £2 coins have been around longer (think double sovereigns, or nickel-brass commemorative £2 editions), the bi-metallic £2 coins were only introduced in 1997. Since then we've seen many fantastic designs issued, including coins celebrating Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale and Jane Austen.

The coins will have the edge inscription “CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF THE £2”, except the gold coins, which will have a plain edge.

Which Coins Will be in the 25th Anniversary £2 Coin Set?

The coins in the set are:

  • Isambard Kingdom Brunel (2006)
  • Florence Nightingale (2010)
  • Robert Burns (2009)
  • Charles Darwin (2009)
