Time is running out for the Prime Minister Alexander “Boris” Johnson to get his proposed EU withdrawal deal approved by European leaders and the UK Parliament. The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has stated firmly that the EU will decide at the end of the week whether a deal is possible.

The mood among EU leaders is gloomy surrounding this revised deal, with his changes around the Ulster backstop going down like a lead balloon with the Irish government. It’s not clear at this stage if a further delay to Britain’s withdrawal date will be granted even if Mr Johnson requests one.

Rumours are circulating that the British government is lobbying Hungary to potentially veto a delay, satisfying the law in accordance with the Benn Act for a “no-deal” exit. Whether Hungary would support such a nuclear option from Johnson is far from certain, but it shows how cornered the British government is. Patience is wearing thin within the European Commission so this week could be the last throw of the dice for Mr Johnson.
