This 1861 Victoria Variation Error Gold Sovereign NGC XF-45 Coin is a gold graded full sovereign that has one of five well known 1861 sovereign variation errors.

The coin has a 'C' over rotated 'C' in 'Victoria' which is exceptionally clear in this example and rated as the R2 -Rarity 2, Very Rare (Marsh 2nd Edition). Note - the slab actually states it is 'C' over inverted 'C' however both terms are correct.

The coins also bear a distinct feature of the letter 'R' overlaid on another 'R' in the word 'Victoria', which is clearly visible in the accompanying photographs of this item. The coin has been slabbed and graded as XF-45 by NGC.

Marsh 44B, Spink 3852D. NGC Cert #6321097-003

The only other coin in the NGC census for C over C and RIA/RIA sold at auction NGC AU55 for £2,800 Coin Cabinet Auction Sept 2020.

These coins are struck from 22 carat gold (.917 fineness) and contain 0.2354 troy ounces of the precious metal.

Five Variations Errors of the 1861 Sovereigns are:

  • an error where the 1 in 1861 is a Roman letter I.
  • an error where there the C in VICTORIA is over a rotated C.
  • an error where there is a T over V in VICTORIA.
  • an error where the F is over a V in DEF and the date is narrow.
  • an error where E is over a rotated E.

1861 Gold Sovereigns

The coin was minted in the year when Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's spouse, passed away. On December 14, 1861, at the age of 42, he succumbed to typhoid fever after enduring stomach pains for two years prior to his death. Historians speculate that his demise may have been attributed to ailments like Crohn's disease, kidney failure, or abdominal cancer, but the exact cause remains unknown to this day.

Obverse

The obverse of the sovereign shows the young portrait design of Queen Victoria. This is the second (large) head variety. The initials, WW, for the engraver William Wyon are incuse without stops in the truncated neck. The obverse bears a short inscription.

 VICTORIA DEI GRATIA

Reverse

The reverse of the sovereign shows Jean Baptiste Merlen's shield design. The die number is located above the rose at the bottom of the coin. The inscription reads:

BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:
