The 1872 gold full sovereign features the young head portrait of queen Victoria as the obverse design, with the reverse showing the Crowned Shield by William Wyon.
William Wyon designed the Young Head portrait on the 1872 Victoria gold sovereign. The reverse bears the shield design by Jean Baptiste Merlen. This historic 22 carat gold coin was struck at the London branch of the Royal Mint.
The 1872 shield sovereign can appear either with or without die number. The coin in the photograph appears without die number. If the die number was present, it would appear below the wreath on the reverse.
Marsh 47 (no die number) Marsh 56 (with die number).
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
The 1872 sovereign was issued with a nominal value of one pound sterling. Whether issued by the London or Australian branches of The Royal Mint, all these gold coins are referred to as British sovereigns.
In 1872, the sovereign was issued with two types of reverse design; the shield and the St George and Dragon. This is a 1872 Victoria shield sovereign.
