This 1872 Victoria sovereign was issued by the London mint. We currently have only one of these coins in stock, this will be as pictured. This was recently found in a examination of our extensive 1872 sovereign stock. We were suprised and delighted to find this rare sovereign! Marsh rarity rating unknown (not listed).
Lovely toning, double stamping can be seen on reverse, see the second A of BRITANNIARUM.
We have only ever seen this example of the 1872 65/64 die number in our time trading in sovereigns. It is rare to see errors in die numbers, they are more commonly seen in dates. We can find two historical sales of this variety, one high grade coin in 2012 in part of the Bentley collection sold at Baldwins auction house for £1300 plus buyers premium and VAT. The other one sold by London Auction in March 2016 in a fairly low grade for £300 plus buyers premium and VAT.
Standard Marsh Reference Number 56, subtype unlisted by Marsh in the 2002 Edition even though he lists die number 65 in his table of known die numbers for 1872. The sub type is also unlisted in the revised 2017 edition.
Attractive rainbow coloured toning.
Die cracks can be seen running under the legend REGINA FID: DEF: BRITANNIARUM on the obverse. There is also some double stamping that can be seen in the second A of BRITANNIARUM.
