These 1874 Gold Sovereign Victoria Young Head St George Coins are graded using British Grade.
The Royal Mint in London produced this British Sovereign in 1874. Its reverse side features Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St. George slaying a dragon, which has become an iconic symbol of the British Royal Mint and the sovereign coin.
The coin is struck in 22 carat gold / 0.9167 fineness and contains 0.2354 troy ounces of the precious metal.
As UK legal tender pound sterling coins, gold sovereigns are exempt from capital gains tax, and are exempt from VAT due to being investment gold.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
In 1874, gold sovereign coins were issued with two iconic designs. The obverse featured William Wyon's Young Head design of Queen Victoria, while the reverse showcased Benedetto Pistrucci's St. George and the Dragon design, which has become a symbol of the British Royal Mint.
St. George and dragon reverse types exist for all three mints. Victoria Young Head sovereigns were produced from 1837 to 1887 inclusive. There are two reverse designs, the shield and St. George & Dragon. The former were minted throughout the young head portrait whereas the latter were created from 1871-1887.
The William Wyon portrait of Queen Victoria is depicted on the obverse of the coin showing the young head portrait. The inscription of this coin reads as the following:
VICTORIA D : G : BRITANNIAR : REG : F : D:
The reverse was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci and shows the iconic St. George and the Dragon. This has been used on sovereigns (with a few exceptions) since 1817.
