Who was Queen Victoria?

Queen Victoria was queen of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in (1837-1901) and empress of India (1876-1901). Queen Victoria's reign was one of the longest to date in British history. She was the daughter of Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn.

This coin was struck in the same year that the United States returned to the gold standard. This was a result from the  Specie Payment Resumption Act taking effect for the first time since the American civil war.

Reverse

The reverse features famous Italian visual designer Benedetto Pistrucci's depiction of St. George slaying the dragon on his horse. The bottom of the coin shows the issue date '1879' and contains the initials B.P to the right.
