We have only ever seen this one example of this sub type of the 1880 S sovereign. This particular specimen was found when we sorted through are extensive collection of 1880 sovereigns. Now listed in Marsh's 'The Gold Sovereign' 2017 revised edition as Marsh reference 76A 'Inverted A for V in Victoria.' This was given the R2 rating, very rare. Slight doubling in some of the legend lettering on the obverse and reverse. Die crack in DEI on the obverse.
We have found a few historical sales of this rare variety of the 1880S, one in a slightly lower grade than ours was sold at auction in 2013 by Londoncoins for £1,287 including buyers fees (Auction142, 2989) a second one was sold in 2015 in a slightly better grade than ours for £3744 including buyers fees (A149, Lot 2827). A high grade example was also sold in the Bentley Collection part 2 lot 665 for hammer price £6000 in 2012.
The type is listed in Spink 2018 under the reference 3855 at £1500 in VF and £3000 in EF compared with £325 for the normal type.
