1902 Coin Sets

This coin set was issued to celebrate the coronation of Edward VII on the 9th August 1902 at Westminster Abbey, London. The Royal Mint issued two different proof coin sets, the thirteen coin set featured on this page, and also an eleven coin set, similar to this one, but without the double sovereign and quintuple sovereign.

Matt Finish

The matt finish appears on specific coins to create a non-reflective surface. This effect is accomplished by subjecting the dies to sandblasting before the hardening process takes place.

This set would have orginally come in a red leather box, it was also issued without a certificate.

Obverse

The obverse on the 1902 coins were designed by famed engraver, George William De Saulles, shows King Edward VII facing to the right. The engraver's initials DeS. appear below the truncation and the legend around the coin reads:

EDWARDVS VII D : G : BRITT : OMN : REX F : D: IND : IMP:

Reverse

Please see the table below in Specifications, there were various engravers who designed the coin.
