This 1927 George V Perth mint sovereign has been graded aEF, almost extremely fine condition. This is a high grade coin which would be suitable for a serious coin collector. Struck in 22 carat gold, this British gold coin bears the iconic engraving of St George and Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci on the reverse.
In 1927, only three mints produced gold sovereigns; the Pretoria branch in South Africa (SA), and the Perth (P) and Melbourne (M) branch mints in Australia. The London branch of The Royal Mint had stopped striking sovereigns after 1925 and the mintages reported for the other mints are:
Pretoria 16,379,704
Perth 1,383,544
Melbourne 310,156*
*Krause state none are known to exist. It is highly possible that sovereigns struck in Melbourne at this time were dated 1926 or 1928, or even some other date for which dies were available. Dies were very expensive to make so it was not unusual for dies to be re-used rather than discard them at the end of a calendar year.
In 1911, the first gold sovereign of George V's reign was produced. This new bust was created by the Australian, Edgar Bertram Mackennal. The use of this bust continued through George V's reign. The obverse features the legend GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX: F.D.IND:IMP:
This coin features Benedetto Pistrucci's famous engraving of St George slaying the dragon. This design first appeared on sovereigns in 1817.
