Arnold Machin - Designer of the Second Portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Designed by artist, Arnold Machin, the Second Definitive UK Coin Portrait exudes elegance. This new portrait was released with the introduction of the new five and ten pence decimalisation coins in 1968. This bust displays the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara; this tiara had been a wedding gift to the Queen from her grandmother Queen Mary in 1947. The Queen's hair is loosely waved and fabric is draped around her shoulders. This portrait was used on coins until 1984.

Raphael Maklouf - Designer of the Third Portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II

Raphael Maklouf was born in Jerusalem on 10th December 1937 and came to the United Kingdom after the Second World War. His effigy of Her Majesty the Queen approved for the United Kingdom coinage from 1985 was his first coin design.

On 8 August 1984 Her Majesty approved two new designs for use on United Kingdom coinage from 1 January 1985, one for circulating coins and one for large commemorative issues. Selected form thirty-eight models submitted by seventeen artists, both are the work of sculptor Raphael Maklouf. He set out with the intention of producing "a symbol ... regal and ageless" and following his selection was granted two sittings by the Queen.

His "Third Portrait" of Elizabeth II was used from 1985 to 1997 inclusive.

Obverse

The obverse will either feature the third or fourth portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. This has appeared (with a few exceptions) on the reverse of modern sovereign coins since 1817.
