History of the Chinese Panda

The first giant panda was discovered on April 1, 1869 in China (Sichuan) by Armand David a French priest. Due to the first Panda bear being found in China the Chinese Mint designed bullion coins that featured the panda.

The Chinese Bullion coin was first issued in 1982 and quickly gained popularity due to its high gold content, beautiful design, and the appeal of the panda motif.

Why are Panda Bullion Coins Popular?

Panda coins are popular with collectors as every year the reverse design of the coin changes.

Also, the panda bullion coin is minted in different sizes, with the most common being 1 oz, 1/2 oz. 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.

Today it is the gold standard of the coins produced by the People's Republic of China.

Obverse

The obverse shows the legendary temple of heaven in Beijing known as the Temple of Heaven.

Also, the obverse bears a Chinese inscription that translates too:

The People’s Republic of China

1986

Reverse

The 1986 coin features a panda standing next to some bamboo, with the gold content above and the face value below.
