Buy a bullion gold £5 coin, also known as a quintuple sovereign or a five pound piece.
Way back in 1902, five pound gold coins were issued for circulation, but even then, they were probably mainly hoarded as curiosities and keepsakes as the modern cupro-nickel £5 crowns are nowadays.
In 1980 the Royal Mint started issuing gold £5 coins once again, although some dates were issued only as part of a 4 coin gold proof set, others were issued as proofs, some as uncirculated versions.
In 1987, the £5 coin was issued only in a "Brilliant Uncirculated" version, and there were no proof versions, even in the proof sets. Sometimes we find it hard to understand the thinking at the Royal Mint. What makes this more surprising is that in 1987 and 1988 a different version of the third portrait was used, showing the queen's shoulders, rather than being cut off at the neck. This portrait only appears on the five pound gold coins, and only for these two years. This fact makes this coin, along with the 1988, an important one for type collectors. We usually have one of these large and striking gold coins in stock.
From the 1984 issue, the Mint started to place a letter "U" to the left of the date to denote Uncirculated versions of the five pound gold coins, as opposed to the proof versions, we do not know why they thought this was necessary.
The "uncouped" third definitive UK coin portrait of Elizabeth II by sculptor, Raphael Maklouf.
The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's design of St George and the Dragon as seen on the bullion sovereigns coins issued in the same year.
