The 1988 Gold Proof Sovereign 3 Coin Set
Apart from the 1988 Gold Britannia Proof Set, this is the only British gold proof set available for this date. Although the Royal Mint started issuing 4 coin gold proof sets in 1980, they were not issued in every year, and 1988 is one of the years for which they were not issued.
This set features 3 coins struck in 22-carat/0.917 fine gold and comes with its own presentation box and certificate of authenticity
The modern sovereign was introduced in 1817. Issued with a nominal value of one pound, it was a circulation coin in Britain until the middle of World War I and abroad until 1932. The sovereign was reintroduced in 1957 as an investment coin to meet demand for gold bullion.
Proof coins are specially produced to a much higher standard of finish. Originally, proofs were intended as pre-production samples. As a printer would produce a small number of "proof" copies for checking and approval, so a mint would produce proofs for approval by the mintmaster, the monarch, and for other purposes. When coin collecting began to become popular about two centuries ago, a larger number of proofs were sometimes made for sale to collectors.
The obverse features the third portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St. George slaying the Dragon

These edge knocks and marks do not alter the specifications of the coins.
