These 1989 Gold Proof 500th Anniversary Sovereign - NGC Graded Coins are a sought-after celebratory one-year only edition of the sovereign. The coins feature the Coronation obverse and Tudor Rose reverse designs by Bernard Sindall.
These coins have been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Each coin is struck from 0.917 fineness / 22 carat gold and contains 0.2354 troy ounces of the precious metal.
These coins celebrate the 500th Anniversary that the first hammered sovereign was struck. This was under the reign of King Henry VII in 1489.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
This sovereign features the first sovereign reverse redesign in Queen Elizabeth II's reign.
When these sovereigns were originally issued in 1989, they were not universally popular, and the Royal Mint failed to sell out of its entire issue limit. Since then, demand for the 1989 has grown, and prices are now sky high compared with the original price.
Bernard Sindall designed the reverse and obverse of this coin. The original sovereigns were intended to be used as a symbol of Britain's importance and wealth, to impress the rest of Europe.
The obverse shows Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation. She is seated on a throne, holding the Sceptre with Cross and the Rod with Dove. The legend reads:
ELIZABETH II • DEI • GRA • REG • FID • DEF
The reverse of the 1989 Elizabeth II gold sovereign mirrors its 500-year old original counterpart. The Royal Arms shield is surmounted by the royal crown, both images are superimposed upon a double Tudor rose. The inscription reads:
1489-1989 ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD SOVEREIGN
Both the reverse and the obverse designs were created by the sculptor, Bernard Sindall.
