The 1999 Kangaroo Nugget Coin depicts a kangaroo joey standing. A joey is a baby kangaroo. It spends the beginning of its life in its mother's pouch (a doe) until it has finished its development. It will then leave the pouch when ready and then explore the outside world!

The Reverse was designed by Jovan Radanovich.

The coin had an issue limit of 350,000, with a declared total mintage of 127,051 coins.

Why is the Nugget popular?

The Gold Nugget coin series was first introduced in 1986 as a competitor to other countries coins such as the Maple, Krugerrand and Britannia. The Nugget series originally started with having famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia on the reverse. In 1989 they produced a nugget reverse design and a kangaroo reverse design. From 1990 onwards all proof and bullion designs now have a kangaroo on the reverse.

Obverse

The Australian coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. It was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The obverse bears the legend:

ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS

Reverse

A P100 Mintmark appears on the reverse underneath the Kangaroo design marking 100th anniversary of the Perth Mint opening!

The reverse of the 1999 Perth Mint Kangaroo nuggets features a joey, designed by Jovan Radanovich . Also, the coin bears an inscription that reads as:

THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1 OZ. 9999 GOLD 1999
