This is the 2002 Golden Jubilee Gold Proof £5 Coin. This gold crown commemorates the 50th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
This 22 carat coin comes complete with a presentation box and a small information booklet. The coin is issued to a proof finish - perfect for collectors! The total gold weight of this coin is 1.1771 troy ounces.
This crown was produced for the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the 50th anniversary of her reign. In keeping with the designs of the 1953 coronation crown, and the 1977 silver jubilee crown, the queen is shown on horseback. This new equestrian portrait is the work of Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, FSNAD.
In addition to the usual inscription, there is also "AMOR POPULI PRAESIDIUM REG" which translates loosely as "The Love Of The People Is The Queen's Protection". This inscription but with the word REGIS for king instead of REG for queen first appeared on gold angels of Charles I. We sincerely hope it proves more fortuitous and appropriate for our present monarch.
A superb portrait of the Queen in robes and diadem graces the reverse. Both designs are the work of Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, FSNAD, the artist who created the Royal portrait approved for the circulating coins of the United Kingdom from 1998.
The guns boomed out across Hyde Park, and throughout the land the accession was declared of the youngest Monarch to succeed to the throne since 1837, when the 18-year-old Princess Victoria became Queen. Today, almost fifty years on, she is still performing the duties of monarchy, and her Golden Jubilee celebrations will be a tribute to a much loved and respected sovereign.
The obverse was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and shows an equestrian portrait of a young Elizabeth II on horseback.
The text reads:
ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF
· AMOR · POPULI PRAESIDIUM REG
2002
The reverse shows a mature portrait of The Queen facing right, also designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. 'FIVE POUNDS' appears at the bottom.
