This 2008 14-coin Gold Proof £1 Set celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the £1 coin. The coins are all in capsules, and issued in a presentation box.
The story of the modern pound coin starts in 1983. The new nickel-brass one pound coins were issued as a replacement for the £1 banknotes, which suffered from wear and tear with age. By 1983, the life expectancy of the £1 note was about 6 months, and that of a coin is about 100 years. The last £1 note was issued in 1984, and ceased to be legal tender on 11th March 1988.
All of the coins feature the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. This is the fifth coinage portrait of Her Majesty to be used on UK coins.
The text reads:
ELIZABETH II · D · G REG · F · D · 2008
