This 2008 London Olympic Games Gold Proof £2 celebrates the Centenary of the 4th Olympiad. The 1908 London Olympic Games were the first time the event was held in London.

This 2008 London Olympic Games Gold Proof £2 celebrates the Centenary of the 4th Olympiad. The 1908 London Olympic Games were the first time the event was held in London.

Each of these coins is struck from 22 carat (0.916 fine) gold and issued to a proof finish. This two pound (or double sovereign) contains double the amount of gold found in a sovereign, 0.4708 troy ounces. 

The coins come in wooden presentation boxes, along with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

As a fitting tribute to the date the Olympic Games were held, only 1,908 of these coins were minted.

Centenary of the 4th Olympiad

The modern Olympic Games began in 1896. Held every four years, the 4th Olympiad took place in London in 1908. This coin celebrates 100 years since the games. It was also issued to mark the run-up to the 2012 London Olympic Games, also held in London.

Obverse

The obverse features the portrait fourth coinage portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The text reads:

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Thomas Docherty and features a running track as the central image. The date '1908' represents the 1908 Olympic Games which were held in London.
