Gold Guineas

The 2016 gold five guinea is minted to the same weight and size as its original predecessor. It features the shield design from the last five guinea coin struck under King George III.

In keeping with the original 1729 five guinea coin, supplied by the East India Company, the letters E.I.C. can be found under the effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Obverse

The obverse contains the inscription:

ST HELENA QUEEN ELIZABETH II 2016 5 POUNDS.

The initials of the East India Company can be seen below the effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Special permission to use them was granted by the Royal Household.

Reverse

The reverse features an updated version of the last circulating guinea from George III. The 'spade' features a quarter of the four crests of England and Scotland, France, Hanover and Ireland.

The design was commissioned by the East India Company.
