2020 Rosalind Franklin DNA 50p Silver Proof Coin

2020 Rosalind Franklin Silver Proof 50 Pence Coin. The coin celebrates the 100th anniversary since the birth of Rosalind Franklin.

This coin has a mintage of 3,700 and a limited edition presentation of just 3,500 coins. The coins come in a presentation box. This is part of The Royal Mint's Innovation In Science Series.

Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind Franklin was a British scientist who contributed to the discovery of the structure of DNA. Franklin and her assistant, Raymond Gosling, were able to study X-Ray diffraction images of DNA to reveal its double helix structure. One very famous image is now known as Photograph 51 as it was the 51st diffraction image taken.

Privy Council

We first heard about the coin through The Privy Council. This is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval. The information is then announced on the Privy Council website.

Obverse

The obverse was designed by Jody Clark and features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features Photograph 51, the first famous X-ray diffraction image of DNA. It was designed by the David Knapton, a member of the mint's graphic design team.
