The Legend of Robin Hood

Robin Hood has been a part of British folklore since the 13th century. The legend of the skilled archer who was known to steal from the rich to give to the poor has been passed down through generations.

Hood's accomplices, the 'Merry Men' included Little John, Will Scarlett, Friar Tuck, Much and Maid Marian. They were said to have lived together in Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham.

Robin Hood has been portrayed in numerous books, television series and over 100 films. Depictions of him have varied over time, with him being shows as a peasant or a nobleman.

Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott wrote about Robin Hood in The Waverley Novels, a series of the historical stories. In the 1819 publication, the outlaw is portrayed as a nobleman named Locksley, an alias which is still used to this day.

Historians are unable to confirm whether the legend of Robin Hood is true. There are even suggestions that 'Robin Hood' may have been a title given to a group of bandits.

Privy Council

We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and livery company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to the Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.

Obverse

The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by Jody Clark. The legend reads:

ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 100 POUNDS

Reverse

The reverse of the coin depicts Robin Hood on a tree branch, holding a bow and arrow. The border contains the following text:

ROBIN HOOD · 1 OZ · FINE GOLD · 999.9 · 2021
