British Royal Coat of Arms

The British Royal Coat of Arms is the official coat of arms for the British monarch, Elizabeth II. The quartered shield of the United Kingdom is surmounted by a royal crown.

The shield dates back to the 1707 Act of Union and symbolises the alliance of the four Great British nations. The shield displays the three passant lions for England, the rampant lion for Scotland, the three lions for Wales and the golden harp for Northern Ireland.

The Royal Mint released this statement in 2019 when the coin was first introducted:

"First appearing in 1983, the iconic design by Eric Sewell has been reinterpreted by Timothy Noad for 2019. This design exemplifies the royal heritage which each monarch inherits during their reign and features the heraldic devices which have lasted through the ages, such as the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland supporting the shield."

Obverse

The obverse features the fifth portrait of HM The Queen. It was designed by Jody Clark.

Reverse

The reverse is a modern-day reinterpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms design by Eric Sewell, which first appeared on £1 coins in 1983.

The latest design was created by Timothy Noad, the acclaimed coin designer, illuminator and calligrapher.

The motto of The Order of the Garter is set within a garter which encircles the shield of the United Kingdom:

HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

The monarch's motto is set at the base with the English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish shamrock and Welsh leek:

DIEU ET MON DROIT
