2022 Gold Proof Piedfort Sovereign

The 2022 Piedfort Gold Proof Sovereign Platinum Jubilee Coin is part of the 2022 Platinum Jubilee sovereign range. The coin features a special Royal Coat of Arms design by Timothy Noad.

This is the first time a piedfort sovereign has been issued since 2020. The coins are struck to a proof finish from 22 carat (0.9167 fineness) gold.

The coins are presented inside a wooden box, along with a certificate of authenticity from the Royal Mint.

Double Thickness

The piedfort sovereign has the same diameter as the normal sovereign (22mm), however it is twice the thickness and twice the weight of the coin.

Royal Coat of Arms

The royal coat of arms was designed in the mid-12th century with its main purpose to help identify kings, queens and other power holders in western Europe. Today the Royal Arms is an image that we can see on a daily basis, appearing on passports, coins, government documents and much more.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II reached 70 years in service. This milestone event was celebrated across the Commonwealth Nations.

Proclamation

We first heard about this coin from a Privy Council Notice. The proclamation came into force on the 17th March 2022.

Obverse

The obverse shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The inscription reads:

"· ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REGINA · FID · DEF ·"

Reverse

Designed by Timothy Noad, the reverse features a depiction of the Royal Coat of Arms. The arms feature the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown, topped by a golden lion. The date appears at the bottom.
