The Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrates 70 years since she ascended the throne on 6th February 1952, although her coronation would not take place until June the following year.
Queen Elizabeth II is Britain's longest reigning monarch, after surpassing that of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria (63 years, 216 days), in 2015.
Her Majesty is also the 4th longest reigning monarch of all time, behind Louis XIV of France, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand, and Johann II of Liechtenstein.
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and livery company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
Designed by John Bergdahl, the obverse features Queen Elizabeth II on horseback. It is similar to the 1953 Coronation crown.
The design is surrounded by the Order of the Garter, “HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”.
The text reads:
2022 ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE
Designed by design agency, Osborne Ross, the coin features a clean reverse design that comprises of the number 70, Queen Elizabeth II’s royal cypher and the years that span her reign thus far (1952-2022).
