The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla was an event that captivated the attention of people throughout the UK and around the globe. The ceremony took place on May 6th, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London.
This Royal Mint bullion coin has special security features. These include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.
After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September 2022, Martin Jennings sculpted and designed the new King Charles III definitive coinage portrait.
Furthermore, following his initial portrayal of His Majesty in the UK definitive coinage, he was once again commissioned to engrave the crowned coinage portrait design to commemorate the coronation of KCIII.
Jennings was born in 1957. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1979, where he studied English Literature and Language. Afterwards, Jennings undertook a course in Lettering (1979-80).
Gold bullion Britannia coins are the UK's most popular CGT exempt 1oz gold coin. Britannias were introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987. These British gold bullion coins have a face value of £100. Between 1987 - 2012, the coins were struck in 22 carat gold (0.9167 fineness); from 2013 onwards, the coins have been struck in 24 carat gold (0.9999 fineness). The coins all contain one troy ounce of gold, whether they are struck in 22 carat gold or 24 carat gold.
The obverse features the first crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III, facing left, engraved by Martin Jennings. The coin bears the following inscription:
CHARLES · III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS · 2023 ·
The reverse of the coin shows the iconic 'standing Britannia' image by Philip Nathan.
BRITANNIA 2023 1oz 999.9 FINE GOLD
A small micro-text border can be seen around Britannia. It says "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to “an ornament and a safeguard".
The field now features surface animation - micro-waves which create lines, showing a pattern in the background. Tincture lines have also been added to show colours and patterns on the metal.
