The Queen Elizabeth II coins will have a short production run, with a second bullion Britannia design being issued in the new year. The new coin will feature the King Charles III effigy, by Martin Jennings.
The 2023 Britannia coins feature the special security features, introduced on the 2021 coins.
The coins feature a latent image, tincture lines, micro-text and surface animation to ensure they are some of the most visually secure bullion coins on the market.
British silver bullion Britannia coins were introduced in 1997. Up until 2013, the coins were struck from Britannia silver (0.958 fine). In 2013, this changed to 0.999 fine silver.
These coins have a face value of £2 and contain one troy ounce of silver. We believe we are the best place to buy silver Britannias in the UK with our bullion prices hard to beat and a huge selection of backdated Britannia coins.
The obverse bears the Jody Clark portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This is the final time the portrait will appear on the Britannia coins, as it will eventually be replaced by the new King Charles III effigy by Martin Jennings.
The text on the coin reads:
ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS
The reverse of the 2023 silver Britannia features Philip Nathan's classic 'standing Britannia'. Britannia is shown holding a trident and shield. The text reads:
BRITANNIA 2023 1oz 999 FINE SILVER
The special security features include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.
A micro-text border is also used. It says "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to “AN ORNAMENT AND A SAFEGUARD". The field features surface animation - micro-waves which create lines, showing a pattern in the background. Tincture lines have been added to show colours and patterns on the metal.
