History of Britannia

Lady Britannia made her first appearance on Roman coins in AD 119 during the Roman era under the rule of Emperor Hadrian but disappeared after the collapse of the Roman Empire. She reappeared during the reign of King Charles II, and Britannia has since featured on every subsequent British monarch

Silver Britannias

The Silver Britannia is a popular coin produced by the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom. The coin was first introduced in 1987 and is widely considered to be the UK's most popular Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exempt 1 oz silver coin.

The face value of a 1 oz Silver Britannia is £2, although the coin's intrinsic value is significantly higher due to the value of the silver content. The coin's design features a depiction of Britannia, a female figure symbolising Britain.

King Charles III Britannia Coins

Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September 2022, The Royal Mint released two versions of the 2023 Britannia coins: one featuring Queen Elizabeth II's fifth portrait and another with the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III.

The new portrait, crafted by renowned sculptor and engraver Martin Jennings, debuted on the 2023 King Charles III Britannia coin range. The same coinage portrait is featured on the 2024 Britannia 1 oz silver coin as well as the entire 2024 Britannia coin series.

Obverse

The obverse of the coins featured in this set include the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. Each coin bears a legend on the obverse.

Reverse

The reverse, designed by Marie-Alice Harel, depicts the head of Lady Britannia above water, adorned with a plumed Roman helmet featuring the Lion of England. She gazes upon a crescent moon amidst rising waves, symbolising Britain’s maritime prowess.

Investment gold products are VAT-free, while silver products include VAT.
Cancellations & Returns:
Once you place an order, you cannot cancel it. We do not currently accept returns, however. You may be able to sell your investment products back to Chards at the current buy back rate.
