History of St George on British Coinage

St George made his first appearance on British coins in 1817 after the government commissioned the 1816 British Coinage Act. Italian sculptor, Benedetto Pistrucci, was commissioned to create a series of engravings for the new coins.

The first modern sovereign was introduced in 1817, and featured Benedetto Pistrucci’s depiction of St George slaying a dragon. This beautiful design remains on our gold sovereigns today, over two hundred years later. It is one of the worlds most widely recognised coins.

The Royal Mint also released a selection of 2024 St George and the dragon proof coins featuring a modern interpretation of Pistrucci's 1817 sovereign design for their Great Engravers series, celebrating British coinage.

Legacy of St George

St George is a famous Christian saint known for the legend of slaying a dragon to save a princess and her town, showing triumph of good over evil. Born in Cappadocia (now Turkey), he was a Roman soldier who stood up against the persecution of Christians, leading to his death around AD 303.

In the 14th century, he became the patron saint of England. His symbol, a red cross on a white background, is part of the Union Jack and stands for bravery and chivalry.

What Is Capital Gains Tax?

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.

This coin bears a legend on the obverse.

CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·

Reverse

The reverse features a modern interpretation of St George and the Dragon, designed by Jody Clark.

St George's appearance in the design reflects that of a Roman soldier, wearing a galea (helmet) and a sagum (cloak), both essential pieces for a Roman soldier going into battle. He is depicted sitting on his horse, which is rearing towards the dragon. George's lance is positioned and ready to thrust into the dragon, which is laid on the ground in a vulnerable position.

A micro-text border reads:
