History of the Chinese Panda

The first giant panda was discovered on April 1, 1869 in China (Sichuan) by Armand David a French priest. Due to the first Panda bear being found in China the Chinese Mint designed bullion coins that featured the panda.

The Chinese Bullion coin was first issued in 1982 and quickly gained popularity due to its high gold content, beautiful design, and the appeal of the panda motif. The panda reverse design changes every year, which makes gold panda bullion coins popular worldwide due to their collectability.

Pandas are produced in several sizes, from 30g to 1g! In some years even larger sized coins have been issued but with very low mintages.

Troy Weights vs Metric Weights

Most major global mints issue coins in troy weights, however, the People's Bank of China have used metric weights since 2016. Demand for the Chinese Panda is not limited to the home market in China. Collectors eagerly await the release of Pandas each year and older issues are highly prized.

10 Years of Love Panda Bullion Coin Reverse Designs (2019-2028)

Since 2019, Chinese bullion coins introduced a ten-year story which began in 2019. The story can be seen presented through each new reverse design until 2028 with the common theme of love between two sibling pandas growing up.

Chinese Panda Coin Reverse Designs (2019-2025)

If you're interested in the other designs, we have a short bullet-point list explaining all the reverse designs that have featured in the series so far.

  • 2019: Mother panda cradling one of her twin cubs in her arms.
  • 2020: The other panda sibling can be seen eating bamboo leaves.
  • 2021: Mother panda teaching one of the siblings how to climb trees.
  • 2022: Panda siblings play in the snow.
  • 2023: Brother and sister now 2 and a half years old reaching out to each other.
  • 2024: Showcases an adult panda with one of their panda cubs.
  • 2025: An adult panda surrounded by two youthful panda cubs.

What Is the Temple of Heaven?

The temple of heaven is a complex of religious buildings that was visited by the famous Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The building is located in the south eastern part of Beijing.

The Significance of Panda Bears in Modern Cinema

The Kung Fu Panda franchise is a popular animated series produced by DreamWorks Animation. It was first released in 2008 and quickly became a global hit due to its blend of action, comedy, and heartwarming storytelling. The franchise then expanded with three sequels, the latest of which released in 2024.

Obverse

The obverse shows the legendary temple of heaven in Beijing that has featured on the Chinese panda bullion coin for more than 40 years!

The obverse bears a Chinese inscription that translates to:

The People’s Republic of China

2025

Reverse

The reverse of the 8g gold panda coin features a depiction of an adult panda seated on the grass, eating bamboo, while two young cubs gaze at their parent. The cub closest to the adult panda seems eager to play or gain attention, while the other cub is lying atop what appears to be a rock.

The coin also bears text that tells the weight, purity, and face value of the bullion coin.
