Myths and Legends is a series of gold and silver bullion coins issued by the Royal Mint. The first series featured characters from Robin Hood, the second series included key characters from King Arthur, and the third series showcases the legendary characters from Beowulf.
The legend of King Arthur features a mythical figure known as Merlin, who is primarily recognised for serving as Arthur's mentor. In the story, Merlin is a mage who was instructed by King Uther to escort his son to safety due to a Saxon invasion of Britain. The fate of King Uther is open to interpretation, but the story invariably depicts the once-powerful monarch and defender of his people as either slain in battle or assassinated.
Merlin then assumes the role of Arthur's mentor and paternal figure, ensuring that the young man is prepared to rule Camelot as its king. Throughout the tale, Merlin observes as Arthur successfully extracts the magical sword Excalibur from a stone, thereby establishing himself as a noble and formidable ruler.
The first coin in the King Arthurian collection depicted the main protagonist, King Arthur, holding the legendary sword Excalibur. The next release showcased Merlin with his magical staff and an owl perched on his shoulder, set against the backdrop of the mythical island of Avalon. The final release in the series features Morgan Le Fay, King Arthur's evil half-sister, in a battle pose.
The reason for the staggered release of the 2023 and 2025 Merlin coins is that The Royal Mint typically releases 10-ounce coins in the Myths & Legends series a year or two after the corresponding 1-ounce versions. This explains why there's a year gap between the release dates of the 1-ounce and 10-ounce King Arthur silver coins.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a form of levies imposed on the profit garnered from the sale of assets, such as real estate, investments, and collectibles. In the United Kingdom, the present CGT allowance is £3,000 per annum per individual, which implies that one can earn up to £3,000 from the sale of assets prior to being subject to CGT.
For UK residents, bullion coins which are UK legal tender pound sterling coins are exempt from capital gains tax (CGT).
The obverse features the official UK definitive coinage portrait of King Charles III, uncrowned, designed by Martin Jennings. His Majesty's portrait faces to the left and bears an inscription.
