2014 Gold Proof Crown Coin - 300th Anniversary of the Coronation of King George I.

This gold proof £5 coin celebrates the 300th anniversary of when King George I ascended the throne.

The coin is struck in 22-carat fine gold and contains 1.1771 troy ounces of the precious metal. It has a limited mintage of just 100 coins.

Alderney Gold Coins

Alderney issued its own coins for the first time only in 1989, although it has only issued special commemorative and collector coins rather than circulating coins. Its gold coins are all proof issues. The mintage figures tend to be quite low, although perhaps this is to expected with a population of under 2,500.

King George I

The German-born George I was descended from James I of England via his grandmother Elizabeth of Bohemia, James' eldest daughter. In 1714, George I was the closest protestant relation to the British Royal Family, and on this basis, he became George I of Great Britain. His reign was not a popular one, due to his foreign origins and frequent absences from Britain, but he was seen as the least worst alternative to the return of the Catholic Stuarts.

The Engraving Process

In a press release, Emma Noble commented that the designing the reverse of the coin was challenging:

King George wasn’t known for being outspoken so there were few quotes directly from him to gain an insight into his personality - only what the history books have written, and they were quite mixed reviews.

I used portraits to inspire my design, so it was a challenge working from other people’s interpretations of him. One continual theme was the 'periwig', so that features prominently in my design. Every curl was a labour of love!

Edge

The edge is milled.

Obverse

The obverse shows the fourth definitive portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
