This 1914 George V gold sovereign coin was minted at the Australian branch mint in Sydney. Struck in 22 carat gold, this British coin bears Pistrucci's classic St George and the Dragon engraving on the reverse.

British coinage including sovereigns were used in Australia as money. It wasn't until 1910 that Australia started to introduce its own coinage. The sovereign with a nominal value of one pound were issued in Australia until 1931. This George V gold coin was struck in Sydney, Australia in 1914; the first year of World War I. Australia played an important role in the war, supporting Great Britain and the British Empire.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features a bare head portrait of King George V by Australian designer, Bertram Mackennal. The engraver's initials B.M. are set in the truncation and the legend reads GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMB:REX F.D.IND:IMP: 

Reverse

The reverse features the traditional engraving of St George and Dragon designed by Bendetto Pristrucci. The letter S in the ground shows that the sovereign was minted in Sydney, Australia. The date and initials B.P. are located in exergue.
