The Young Head St George and the Dragon Sovereign
These sovereigns are also commonly referred to as “Type II” sovereigns. The obverse portrait was created by William Wyon and the reverse is Pistrucci’s St George and Dragon design. The 1879 London Mint is arguably the rarest sovereign of this type and is difficult to find in any grade! Overdates exist and the 1880 over 1870 is considered scarce and collectable. The M (Melbourne), and S (Sydney) mintmarks appear on the obverse of the Young Head St George sovereigns, below the portrait, instead of on the reverse:
