Gold Proof 5 Coin Sovereign Set With Special Reverses.
This gold proof coin set features the one-off sovereigns issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Most notably it includes the rare 1989 proof sovereign, which is now highly collectable due to its scarcity.
These sovereigns are struck to a proof standard in 22 carat fine gold, and are each issued in a protective plastic capsule.
Please note this set does not include the official Royal Mint certificates of authenticity, but is issued with a 'certificate of provenance' from CPM.
On only a few occasions, the Royal Mint have issued gold sovereigns with a different design, in each case for one single year only. As the supply is limited, the prices of these sovereigns have been increasing, they now sometimes change hands at over double the original issue price.
The obverse will vary by year.
The obverse features a representation of The Queen at her coronation by Bernard Sindall. She is seated facing on a throne and is holding the Sceptre with the Cross and the Rod with the Dove.
The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which is the forth definitive portriat of The Queen
The obverse features the fifth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, his initials JC are below the truncation. This is the first time since 1887 that the date has been featured on the obverse of the coin.
The reverse will vary by year.
The reverse of the 1989 Elizabeth II gold sovereign mirrors its 500 year old original counterpart. The Royal Arms shield is surmounted by the royal crown, both of these images are superimposed upon a double Tudor rose. It was designed by Bernard Sindall.
This reverse engraving marks the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The Shield design of the Royal Arms within a wreath of laurel was created by Timothy Noad, a herald painter at the College of Arms.
A modern one off interpretation of St George and the dragon, designed by Timothy Noad.
2012 was the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. To commemorate this special occasion, a new St George and the Dragon reverse was commissioned. This reverse engraving by Paul Day features a unique interpretation of St George and the Dragon.
A remastered version of the 1817 iconic St George and the Dragon engraving is featured on the reverse of the coin. The design, by Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, features the garter border, which had not been appeared on sovereigns since 1820.
