This is a 10 oz Silver 1901 Bison $10 Replica Note Bar.
These silver bars have the same exact design as the 1901 $10 Bison note, which is a very popular collector's item in the United States.
The bars are struck in .999 fine silver and contain 10 troy ounces of the precious metal. Some versions of the bar have 'SCPM' engraved on the reverse side, with others being smooth on the back or having a generic pattern. Each bar will vary depending on our stock levels.
We are unsure which mint produced these bars. Some sources indicate they may come from Southern Coins & Precious Metals (New Orleans) in the United States, but we cannot confirm this. If you have any more information, let us know!
This silver bar is a replica of the United States 1901 10 Dollar Bison note. This banknote has historical appeal as well as a numismatic interest, and is very popular with collectors of banknotes and silver bars. It was circulating during the 100 year anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and based on signature combinations, the bison notes were issued until the early 1920s.
Some people mistakenly call the note the 'buffalo note' and a few even call it a 'Lewis and Clark note'.
One of the greatest misconceptions about the bison note is that the bison pictured is the now famous animal named 'Black Diamond'. Black Diamond is recorded as being the model for the bison featured on the buffalo five cent piece (nickel), but it is not the model for the 1901 $10 bill.
According to research, the engraving is based on a stuffed bison that was on display at the Smithsonian Institution in the late 19th century. That specific bison was rumoured to have been shot in Montana in 1886.
