This was the second year that a shilling was minted during the reign of Queen Anne using the "After Union" reverse.

Other versions of the 1708 shilling include the second bust of Queen Anne, an  E for Edinburgh mint mark on the obverse and slight differences on the reverse with added plumes and roses and plumes on the angles of the cruciform. 1708/7 overdates also exist for this year.

There is also a variation on the reverse where the garter star does not have rays. This can almost double in market value to an ordinary 1708 shilling.

The CGS 82 grade is similar to MS 64-65. We would grade this coin about Uncirculated.

Queen Anne's reign marks the 1707 Act of Union between Scotland and England. Two countries, with separate legislation and parliaments, but one monarch, uniting to form one Parliament of Great Britain; the United Kingdoms of Great Britain.

This shilling has a coin alignment

Spink Reference - 3610

Obverse

Queen Anne faces left with a draped bust. This is the third bust of Queen Anne. Slight differences from previous portraits include a subtler hair curl on the right said of the fillet. The legend reads "ANNA DEI GRATIA".

Reverse

The reverse shows a plain cruciform. The crowned shields that form the cruciform are the "After Union" design. Whereas before there was a shield for each the arms of England and a separate one for Scotland, they now both appear along side each other on both shields, to show the act of union between the two countries. The legend reads, "1708 MG BRI EP ET HIB REG".
