Buy a graded 1809 Gold Third Guinea George III Coin!

This coin was struck in 22kt Gold and was minted at the Royal Mint in London. The Third Guinea Coins were only minted during the reign of George III from 1797-1813,  apart from the exception pf 1805 and 1812.

This particular third guinea has the second reverse design and the second laurel head obverse.

The Third Guinea has a diameter of 17mm and a weight at minting of 2.8g

There are three variations of the Third Guinea, this is the third variant due to it having the second reverse and second obverse design.

What's a Third Guinea?

The Third Guinea was introduced in 1797 due to the demand for a 7 shilling coin. They were issued largely as a response to the shortage of gold in Britain caused by the wars with France.

A Third Guinea was equal to 7 shillings:

One Guinea = 21 Shillings, therefore a Third Guinea = 21'0 x 1/3 = 7/- (84 Pence)

Obverse

The Obverse was designed by Lewis Pingo, a medallist and engraver, who came from a family of well known engravers, Thomas (Father) and John (Son). The obverse features the Second Laurete Head surrounded by the legend:

GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA •

Reverse

The Reverse was also designed by Thomas Brock and features a crown with the year 1809 underneath it,  surrounded by the inscription:

DEFENSOR • BRITANNIARUM • REX • FIDEI • 1809
