This 1887 London mint sovereign was the first to feature the jubilee head portrait of Queen Victoria designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm. Struck in 22 carat gold, this British coin features the famous St George and Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci.
This 1887 British sovereign was minted at the London Mint. Other mint marks available for this date are from the Sydney mint and the Melbourne mint, both in Australia.
There are three different sovereign types for 1887; the young head obverse with the shield reverse, the young head obverse with the St George and the Dragon reverse, and the jubilee head sovereign (featuring the St George and the Dragon reverse).
Obverse
The jubilee head obverse was introduced to mark the fiftieth year of Victoria's reign. It was designed by the medalist and sculptor, Joseph Edgar Boehm.
Reverse
All jubilee head sovereigns feature the St George and the Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci.
