In 1916, sovereigns were issued at the Royal Mint, London, and at Melbourne, Perth and Sydney in Australia, and Ottawa in Canada. This 22 carat gold coin was struck in London. Sovereigns were issued as coins for circulation with a nominal value of one pound.

Obverse
The obverse features a bare head effigy of King George V facing left . This portrait was designed by Australian sculptor, Bertram Mackennal. The initials B.M. are in relief in the truncation. The coin bears the legend GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:
Reverse
The reverse features the iconic engraving of St George and the Dragon by Benedetto Pistrucci. The date and the engraver's initials B.P. are below the main design. This area is called the exergue.
