These 1924 Sovereign George V Melbourne Mint CGS Coins, graded by the reputable UK Coin Grading Service, offer collectors an independent assessment of grade, authenticity, and attribution.
Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.
The total mintage figure for 1924 was quite low, compared with over 30 million in some years. It surely rates as the most difficult date of all George V sovereigns.
Not every date exists for gold sovereigns. The London mint stopped producing sovereigns after 1916, although a few 1917s were issued. From 1917, only the branch mints continued to issue sovereigns, and by 1924 only the three Australian mints in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth were issuing them, plus the Pretoria mint in South Africa which only came into production in 1923.
In the UK CGS stands for "Coin Grading Service" and the services (with associated products) are sold with a promise of an independent assessment of grade, authenticity and attribution. The attribution bit is regarding any "type" or "variant" status and we imagine this would include, but is not limited to, anything from different portraits, inscriptions or commemorative one-off designs.
The obverse features the large head portrait of George V's bare head facing left, the portrait was designed by Australian sculptor, Bertram Mackennal. His initials B.M. are located in the truncation. The legend which surrounds the king's portrait reads as:
GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:
The reverse of the 1924 Perth mint sovereign features St George slaying the dragon. This classic design has featured on gold sovereigns since 1817 and is the work of Italian sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci. The initials B.P. sit to the right of the date in exergue.
