The fifty peso coin was designed by Emilio del Moral and was originally issued from 1921 until 1947. Coins were produced after this date, however they were dated 1947 and are known as restrikes.
Among the various mintages, the lowest occurred in 1943, with a mere 89,000 coins produced. Notably, the 1943 edition did not include a denomination on the coin, and it remains unclear whether this was an intentional design choice or a production error that was rectified in subsequent years.
The term "peso" originates from Spanish and has an interesting background. It comes from "pesos de oro," meaning "gold weights," and "pesos de plata," referring to "silver weights."
These coins were minted to commemorate Mexico’s independence in 1821 from Spanish ruling. This bullion coin was minted between the years 1921-47.
The Mexican War of Independence, which occurred from 1810 to 1821, was a significant and courageous struggle. It witnessed Mexican revolutionaries rising up against Spanish colonial rule, leading to the eventual liberation of the nation and the establishment of Mexico as an independent country.
The Winged Victory design, often known as the Angel of Independence, holds great symbolism in Mexico. This iconic statue portrays a majestic angel with outstretched wings, holding a laurel wreath and a broken chain, symbolizing victory and freedom.
The obverse side of the coin showcases the Winged Victory design, commonly known as "The Angel of Independence". It features on all Mexican 50 Pesos in the Centenario gold bullion series.
The legend of the reverse design reads as:
50 PESOS
37,5 Gr. ORO PURO
1821 1946
The reverse of the coin showcases Mexico's national coat of arms, featuring a golden eagle gracefully perched on a prickly pear cactus while gripping a rattlesnake in its beak.
The inscription reads:
ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS
UNITED STATES OF MEXICO
