First Coinage Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II

The first coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II shows Queen Elizabeth II at 26 years old. It was used on British coins from 1953 to 1970.

1957 Sovereigns

Prior to 1957, the last sovereign issued was in 1932. There are known to be three or four proof sovereigns minted in 1953, but these were struck for the National Collections. The edge of the 1957 sovereign coin is of particular interest, as it features 168 grains to the milled edge instead of the 108 grains maintained across other Elizabeth II gold sovereigns. This makes the 1957 gold sovereign easily distinguishable from other issues thanks to its edge.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features Queen Elizabeth II's first coinage portrait. It was designed by Mary Gillick. The coin also bears the inscription:

GRATIA · REGINA ·F:D: + ELIZABETH · II · DEI ·

Reverse

The reverse features the iconic St George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci.

Chose Chards on strength of Laurence’s YouTube videos…he seems very honest and price. I don’t think they can be beaten on price and I was very satisfied with the transaction and the package was delivered next day.

The Star rating should be 5 stars

The Star rating is not just 4 stars but it should have been 5 stars that will not light up, I have spent a lot of time looking on the internet at gold prices most 1oz is mainly at current gold values. However sovereigns have different pricing up to a third more, yet I found Chards prices are very fair prices which I have bought 3 sovereigns this year.

Trusted coin and bullion dealer.

Easy to order on the website from a trusted and established coin and bullion dealer. Item dispatched promptly with insured delivery. Coin received in mint condition with the confidence that the coin received is the genuine article. Chards have a large selection at great prices and are not greedy with the premium on gold coins .
