The History of the Great Fire of London

On September 2nd 1666, the Great Fire of London devastated the city, engulfing residences and structures. The fire ignited in a Pudding Lane bakery, swiftly spreading amid wind and closely situated buildings. The catastrophe prompted extensive urban rebuilding and the adoption of enhanced fire safety protocols.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London

Built in 1677, the Monument to the Great Fire of London honours the 1666 fire. At 202 feet tall, it signifies the city's revival and strength following the destructive inferno.

The History of the London Blitz

The London Blitz occurred during WWII, with the Luftwaffe bombing Britain. Lasting from September 1940 to May 1941, the relentless attacks aimed to weaken Britain's defences. The courage of RAF pilots and citizens was pivotal. Throughout this eight-month period, it's estimated that 43,000 civilians lost their lives, but British resilience thwarted Hitler's invasion plans.

What Planes Did the Luftwaffe Use in the London Blitz?

In 1940, the German bomber fleet mainly consisted of three twin-engine medium aircraft: the Dornier Do 17, the Heinkel He 111, and the Junkers Ju 88. The Luftwaffe heavily depended on these bombers for their operations during that period.

Obverse

The obverse of these medals feature a unique depiction of St George slaying the dragon, and bears the inscription that reads as:

ALL THE BURGESSES WITHIN LONDON

· GOD KEEP YOU ·

1966

Reverse

This 6 Piece Medallion Set features two different reverse designs.

  • The Great Fire of London
  • The Blitz of London

The design of the great fire of London depicts the 'Monument to the Great Fire of London' against a smoky backdrop, featuring silhouettes of people observing the monument, with one figure in the background running away. This design was created by G. Colley, a sculptor and medallist from the 20th century.
