The 1984 Scottish Thistle silver proof piedfort £1 coin is struck in 0.925 sterling silver fineness.
This is the first of a collection of four coins issued between 1984 to 1987 designed by Leslie Durbin, CBE. Each year a one pound coin was isued featuring a plant or flower which represented one of the four countires of the United Kingdom. It was decided that there would be a four year cycle where national designs would feature on the reverse of the £1 coin, in the fifth year this would revert back to the Royal Coat of Arms.
The one pound coin comes in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity. On 28 March 2017, the circulated round pound was replaced by the 12 sided £1 coin. On the 15 October the round £1 coin ceased to be legal tender.
The edge is not only milled but also inscribed with the motto of the Order of the Thistle. The Latin inscription is:
"NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT"
This translates to "No-one provokes me with impunity".
On the milled edge of the coin is the cross crosslet Llantrisant mint mark. The 1983 pound was the first United Kingdom coin to be struck with this distinctive feature. The shape of the cross alluding to Llantrisant, which translated from the Welsh means "Church or Parish of the Three Saints".
The obverse of the coin shows the Arnold Machin portrait of Elizabeth II which was adopted for decimalisation. It was used on nearly all UK coinage between 1968 to 1984.
The reverse of the 1984 pound features an engraving of a Scottish thistle encircled by the Royal Diadem (crown) by silversmith, Leslie Durbin, CBE. This is the first in a four coin series that features a national plant or flower within the Royal Diadem.
