Gold Britannias were first issued in 1987, including proofs. Britannia proof sets have been issued every year since 1987.
The 1996 set contains a gold plated medallion with "Elizabeth R" and the date topped by a large crown, while the reverse design is a rat, the Chinese lunar calendar symbol of the year.
Proof Britannias
For the patient collector, many of the older sets which we offer represent a very good deal as they are at considerable savings compared with purchasing the current year's set direct from the Royal Mint. From 1990, the mintage for the 4 coin sets has been very low.
- This set does not have a certificate.
- Red spot can occur on almost any gold coin, particularly on 22 carat gold coins and occasionally on 24 carat coins such as the 99999 Maples. We have found that some Britannia sets contains coins with small red spots. We do not feel that this affects the collectability of the set and it would not affect the price if we were to buy a coin or coin set with red spot.
