This Royal Mint 1997 RMS Titanic gold medallion is a superb collector piece for enthusiasts of this famous yet tragic Atlantic liner.
Commissioned by Harland and Wolff, marine manufacturers with over 150 years experience, this stunning 22 carat gold medallion is ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of Titanic history.
The RMS Titanic departed from Southampton, England on 10 April 1912 bound for New York. It was the maiden journey for this White Star super liner built by Belfast ship builder, Harland and Wolff. Tragically, in the early hours of the morning of 15 April 1912, the largest passenger liner in history sank after colliding with an iceberg the evening before. Over 1,500 passengers and crew perished making it one of the worst maritime disasters in history.
The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985. Thousands of items have been recovered and are on display in exhibitions around the world. Private collectors will pay enormous sums to own a piece of Titanic memorabilia.
The medallion's obverse is engraved with a lifebuoy decorated with the White Star and Harland and Wolff names. Inside the ring are the flags of both companies.
The reverse design is an art deco stylised engraving of the RMS Titanic departing from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York City.
