This is the 2000 Queen Mother Centenary Gold Proof £5 Coin. The coin was issued to celebrate the Queen Mother's milestone 100th birthday.
This coin is produced to a proof finish - perfect for collectors. The coin comes in a presentation box along with a certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.
Struck from 22 carat (916.7 fine) gold, the coin contains 1.1771 troy ounces of the precious metal.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born 4th August 1900. At the age of 23 she married Prince Albert who was second in line to the throne.
When Albert's brother, King Edward VIII unexpectedly abdicated the throne in order to persue a relationship with the divorced Wallis Simpson, Prince Albert was made the new King. He took on the role of King George VI whilst Elizabeth was made Queen Consort.
Queen Elizabeth lived until the age of 101 and whilst members of the royal family fell in and out of public favour, the Queen Mother maintained popularity with the public, mainly down to her sense of humour.
The obverse is dated 2000, and bears the fourth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
2000 ELIZABETH II D G REGINA FID DEF
Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, the reverse of the coin captures a smiling portrait of the Queen Mother, along with her signature underneath. This was the first time a signature appeared on a UK coins.
